Barachukki falls is one of the twin falls of Shivanasamudra falls on the river Kaveri. It is located in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka. The river splits into two branches here, creating Barachukki & Gaganachukki falls.These falls are falling from a height of about 300 feet over a series of rock steps, creating a broad and picturesque waterfall. It is wider than the Gaganachukki falls.The view points and paths allow tourists to enjoy open views. It is surrounded by dense forests and slope hills. This is why, Barachukki is an ideal destination for nature lovers.
Significance
Shivanasamudra region is Asia's first hydroelectric power station which was established in 1902. It holds historical importance in India's earlu journey towards modernization.The hydroelectric power station was initiated during the rule of the Wodeyar kings of Mysore. It was engineered by Sir K. Seshadri Iyer and Captain John Pennycuick. The area surrounding Barachukki & Gaganachukki has been associated with ancient temples situated in the forested hills.
